Dolphin Concept 1987 | Renzo Piano

This illustration is inspired by the 1987 “dolphin-shaped” cruise ship concept sketches by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano. Drawing inspiration from the graceful form of dolphins in the water, Piano aimed to counter the trend of cruise ships resembling anonymous “shoe boxes.” His design incorporated elegant curves to create a magical and memorable profile.

Initially, the ship was intended to be the newest cruise ship class for the Sitmar Line, reflected in this rendition featuring the late 1980s Sitmar livery. Ultimately, the ships were constructed as Crown Princess and Regal Princess for Princess Cruises. While not as bold as the early concepts, they remained remarkably streamlined and distinct from other cruise ships of their time. Today, only one of these twin ships remains in service, sailing as the ms AMBIANCE.

The illustration is meticulously crafted using original photos, drawings, general arrangement plans, and design specifications to ensure accuracy. These resources provide a solid foundation for this precise and detailed artwork.
